The first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 19, Op. 49, No. 1, is a quiet Andante in G minor and two-four time. A descending upper melody alternates with held intervals and short answering chords. The contrasting theme adds a continuous left-hand sixteenth-note accompaniment, while turns and small runs decorate the right hand. The opening idea returns after a short development, and a soft closing passage brings the movement to rest.Opening and contrasting theme: An eighth-note pickup leads into a connected right-hand phrase above lower chords. Longer upper notes alternate with quicker figures and brief ornaments. The dolce contrasting theme moves into B-flat major, with detached upper notes over repeated broken patterns in the left hand. The melody rises into a higher register, then moves through more active sixteenth-note runs. Short crescendos and diminuendos give shape to these phrases. A compact closing idea leads to the exposition repeat.Development and return: The middle section begins with brief trills in both hands, followed by scales and changes of register. An ornamented upper line continues above short lower chords before the left-hand sixteenth notes resume. The main theme returns at the beginning of the next page. Later, the melody moves into the lower part while the right hand supplies moving notes and intervals. The contrasting theme also returns, now colored by the minor key and decorated with further turns.Quiet ending: On the final page, repeated right-hand chords accompany a lower version of the opening figure. The last section places moving inner intervals over sustained low bass octaves. A calando marking reduces the motion and volume, and detached lower octaves complete the close.Interesting fact: The editor uses small commas to mark phrase endings. A footnote explains that these indicate a slight lift at the end of a musical group even where no rest is written. How to earn points for this piece:Download or purchase the sheet music.Practice the piece carefully.
