The Andante un poco Adagio from Mozart’s Sonata No. 7, K. 309, is a quiet three-beat movement whose short melodic gestures become increasingly decorated. Repeated dotted figures, pauses, and restrained accompaniment give the opening a conversational quality. Later passages add triplets, quick runs, ornaments, and changing inner voices, while the main melodic outline continues to return in recognizable form.Opening phrases: The right hand presents repeated dotted gestures above sparse lower notes and chords. Rests separate some of the responses, and occasional left-hand replies briefly shift attention away from the upper melody. Changes between soft and stronger phrases are written close together, making the small exchanges more distinct.Elaborated returns and contrasting passage: The opening material comes back with additional decoration, including triplets and short thirty-second-note figures. A new passage sets a more elaborate upper line over detached left-hand chords. Sustained inner notes then appear within the texture, and the lower part begins moving more continuously beneath longer upper notes.Later development and ending: The returning material is extended by chromatic runs and rolling figures shared between the hands. Lower trills sound beneath quick upper notes, while held inner tones create several layers within the piano texture. Another ornamented return leads to chordal exchanges and a more spacious closing passage. The final cadence settles quietly into the lower register. The returns are written out rather than indicated by repeat signs.Interesting fact: The ornaments are not confined to the melody. Later in the movement, the left hand carries trills beneath active right-hand figures, reversing the more familiar arrangement of an upper trill over accompaniment. How to earn points for this piece:Download or purchase the sheet music.Practice the piece carefully.
