Molto animato in A-flat minor, this étude begins with a rapid double-note line above wide arpeggiated bass patterns and passes through several changes of key (mm. 1–28). A broad lyrical middle section introduces chordal melody, answering bass lines, and expanding harmonic sequences that rise to a dramatic climax (mm. 29–102). The opening texture returns with renewed double-note motion over arpeggiated accompaniment (mm. 103–131), before the tempo relaxes into a quiet coda whose murmuring inner motion and widely spaced arpeggios lead to an A-flat-major close (mm. 132–148).
