First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Strong, Sturdy Character is a dramatic D-minor miniature with sharply dotted rhythms and conspicuous pauses. Its two voices grow into chordal passages as the music becomes more emphatic. The upbeat and opening four measures introduce clipped, dotted gestures separated by rests. The upper and lower voices frequently answer each other instead of moving continuously together. Measures 5–8 build from thinner lines into fuller chords and a fortissimo arrival. The first section ends with a broad, broken-chord gesture and a rest. The second section returns to the dotted opening idea, then makes abrupt changes between strong and very soft passages. Its final measures thicken again before the melody stops and the bass delivers the last descending-and-rising figure. Interesting fact: The Italian heading combines ‘patetico’ and ‘vigoroso,’ explicitly bringing an emotional, weighty character together with vigor.
