Clementi sustains this contrast between a busy surface and broad harmonic movement throughout the piece. The upper pattern repeatedly leaps upward and falls back through neighboring tones, shifting its shape as the harmonies change. Below it, long notes expand into intervals and chords, occasionally forming a more independent melodic line. Chromatic sequences and dynamic swells give the continuing pattern direction without interrupting its flow. In the final passage, the figure spreads downward across the staves, becoming quieter before both parts settle into a sustained closing chord. The large 3/2 meter is a distinctive part of the design: its three half-note beats provide a broad framework for the many sixteenth notes moving above them.
