Its two flowing lines pursue one another through a light, transparent texture, with the melody itself supplying the accompaniment. The upper voice begins alone, tracing a descending phrase with small turns and a gentle rise. A second voice follows below as the first continues, creating overlapping arcs of eighth notes. The music broadens through rising sequences, brief ornaments, and chromatic changes, but retains its conversational two-part character. Later phrases alternate sustained notes with running replies before the lines descend toward the close. The upper voice finishes first, leaving the lower voice to complete the final response. The ending makes the canonic relationship especially clear: one part has already fallen silent while the following voice is still completing its phrase, echoing the staggered entrance at the beginning.
