Its restless surface develops through changing harmonies and exchanges between the two registers. At the opening, both parts share the same rapidly alternating rhythm, moving together through rising sequences. The texture then separates: one line continues the quick figures while the other adds held tones, chords, or short answers. Middle passages turn the motion over to the lower part and introduce chromatic descents before the opening rhythm returns with fuller force. Later exchanges stretch into the high register, and accented chords punctuate the approach to the ending. The last figures settle downward into a sustained final harmony. The opening's distinctive effect comes from two coordinated layers of alternating notes: both staves use the same sixteenth-note rhythm, creating a unified pulse even as the pitches move through different registers.
