Its measured pace allows the intertwining voices and shifting harmonies to remain at the center of the music. The subject first appears alone in the lower register, then enters above while the original line continues. Further entries fill the texture with overlapping phrases, sustained tones, and flowing eighth notes. Chromatic movement adds tension to the middle passages, where the repeated-note figure emerges at different heights among fuller chords. A later increase in volume and a few ornamental turns brighten the exchange before a long descending motion leads into a softer, slowing conclusion. A telling detail is the fugue's bass-led opening: the upper staff remains silent while the main idea is established below, so the listener first hears the theme without any accompanying harmony.
