Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum, Op. 44 No. 53, is an Allegro molto built on a continuously rising-and-falling upper figure. Long lower notes and widely spaced answers provide a spacious foundation beneath its quick motion. The same arching pattern persists throughout, changing pitch and harmony as the bass moves between low sustained notes and higher melodic replies. Chromatic alterations add tension within the familiar shape, while shifts of register change the distance between the two parts. The final passage diminishes and settles into a soft, sustained chord. An interesting detail is the direction printed after the ending: Segue Fuga links this flowing piece to the fugue that follows it in the collection.
