This Allegro non troppo in 3/4 maintains a flowing pulse while its melodic line moves between widely separated registers. The opening places a descending upper phrase over small broken-chord groups. As the melody moves lower, the accompaniment climbs, briefly reversing their usual register relationship. The running figure later shifts into the upper part above sustained bass harmonies, then passes between the parts through more emphatic sequences. Near the end, a descending sweep leads into low, closely interwoven figures before a full rolled chord closes the piece. An interesting detail is the shifting position of the melody: the score changes clefs within the upper staff as the tune descends below the accompanying motion, creating a striking reversal of the opening sound.
