Repeated notes and a rising continuation provide recognizable shapes within its chromatically changing harmony. The subject begins alone in the upper register, and further voices enter around it before the bass joins the full texture. Flowing sequences connect the entries, while longer notes hold one line in place as another moves. A quieter middle passage thins the sound, followed by renewed growth and more closely interwoven phrases. Near the end, the subject appears in contrasting shapes, and the music slows into a sustained final chord. An interesting detail is Clementi's labeling near the close: the score marks both a contrary-motion form of the theme and its regular form, drawing attention to the same idea appearing with its direction reversed.
