Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum, Op. 44 No. 90, is a Fugato marked Allegro non troppo. Its character comes from interwoven melodic lines, with short rising figures and sustained notes passing through a closely knit contrapuntal texture. The opening idea appears in the upper voice while a lower line enters beneath it. As additional strands join, held notes overlap with moving answers, and the small rising figures recur at different pitches. The middle grows more emphatic through sequential exchanges and accented entries, then relaxes into softer passages without losing the dialogue between voices. A brief held pause near the end interrupts the flow; the lines resume, converge, and finally settle into a sustained closing harmony. An interesting detail is that the score calls this piece Fugato: its imitation is audible not only between the upper and lower registers, but also among inner lines that continue beneath longer notes.
