Short detached notes at the ends of phrases contrast with the flowing eighth-note lines. Measures 1–8 state and repeat the main idea, first quietly and then more strongly, ending with a compact cadence. Measures 9–19 develop an ascending figure that is echoed in the bass and colored by changing accidentals. The phrases grow broader before subsiding. Measures 20–21 introduce a rising, largely unaccompanied line; the main theme returns in measure 22 and leads to a firm chordal close. Interesting fact: The bass echoes the rising figure halfway through each measure in the middle section, creating a brief dialogue between the two voices.
