Grieg’s Watchman’s Song begins with a calm, measured call in which the two hands often move together. Spacious chords and clear pauses give the tune a deliberate, songlike character. The opening alternates a descending call with gently moving, connected phrases. A contrasting middle section changes key and texture, placing quick, quiet arpeggio figures low in the instrument against rising chordal answers. The earlier song returns, gradually strengthening before a slower, sustained final cadence. An interesting detail is the middle section’s register: its rapid figures are written on the bass staff and explicitly assigned to the right hand, creating a low rustling sound between the chordal calls.
