The Moderato opening, mm. 1–8, sets a short chordal melody against sustained harmonies. The left hand repeatedly moves from low bass notes to isolated treble notes while the upper chords continue to sound. Measures 9–16 broaden the upper intervals and pass through stronger mf, f and ff sonorities before the phrase diminishes. The ad libitum line in m. 17 introduces a chromatic descent and return, answered by held chords and a more animated chordal phrase in mm. 18–20. The lower hand takes up the chromatic line at m. 21. Sustained harmonies and a final upper chordal phrase in mm. 22–23 lead to the pp-to-ppp close in m. 24.
