Measures 5–10 introduce a dotted chordal figure and flowing single-note responses, with sustained inner tones and a moving lower line. In mm. 11–18, small grace notes decorate paired-note phrases that pass through the lower register; the texture alternates between held notes, short running figures and chordal replies. Measures 19–24 develop the dotted pattern and add a descending ornamental response. The longer chromatic run in mm. 25–28 rises, falls and slows before the theme returns at m. 29. Measures 29–40 revisit the earlier material with changes in holding, articulation and bass placement. The broad opening gesture returns in mm. 41–42, followed by the quiet closing answer in mm. 43–44.
