The Andante maestoso opens with a quiet low-register figure and gradually adds a sustained upper melody in mm. 1–87. The Allegro commodo, mm. 88–212, sets an elegant melodic line above repeated chords, returning to its themes between octave phrases, chromatic runs and flowing sextuplets. An Andante sostenuto in mm. 213–222 leads to the broad Protestant chorale at m. 223; the chorale continues into a tremolo-backed variation and a free descending Prestissimo flourish on printed page 9 before the march begins at m. 282. The 6/8 Pas redouble alternates dotted and octave figures with quieter paired-note phrases and chromatic flourishes through m. 455. A short Marcato moderato passage in mm. 456–462 leads to the Allegro molto close, mm. 463–479, where arpeggios and brief running replies settle into the final chords.
