Short eighth-note phrases alternate between the voices above notes held within the same texture. Measures 1–12 exchange gently curling figures between the upper and lower parts. Chromatic neighbors and sustained inner tones give these small gestures a warm, unsettled color. Measures 13–20 introduce a more continuous singing melody over moving inner notes. The opening dialogue returns at measure 21, followed by an extended closing passage of tied melody notes, chromatic harmony, and a soft rolled final chord. Interesting fact: Several held notes continue underneath moving notes on the same staff, so the apparent two-part dialogue often contains additional sustained voices.
