“Carnival of Venice” is a Level 3A piano arrangement of a traditional Italian melody. It is written in C major and 3/4 time, with a Moderato waltz tempo. The music uses a light “down-up, bounce” accompaniment, simple waltz rhythm, right-hand melody, register shifts, hand crossing, dynamic changes, and a short closing phrase.
Measures 1–4 introduce the waltz accompaniment before the main melody begins. The left hand plays the “down-up, bounce” pattern, while the right hand waits until the short pickup into the next phrase.
Measures 5–12 present the first main melody. The right hand carries the tune above the left-hand waltz pattern. The phrase stays mostly in a simple, singing style and then prepares a shift up to G.
Measures 13–20 continue the melody in a higher position. The right hand uses the new register while the left hand keeps the same waltz accompaniment. The section also includes a cross-over marking, adding a small visual and technical change to the texture.
Measures 21–28 form the main contrasting section. The melody moves into the left hand, while the right hand is mostly resting at first. This changes the sound from a right-hand melody over accompaniment into a lower-register melodic passage.
Measures 29–36 bring back the main tune with a stronger dynamic. The music changes to forte, the melody returns clearly in the right hand, and the waltz accompaniment continues underneath.
Measures 37 to the end close the arrangement. The music returns to a softer dynamic, includes a short ritardando, and ends with a quiet final chord.
The optional teacher duet adds a separate upper part with repeated chords, small melodic figures, and a short coda. It gives the student melody a fuller dance-like sound while the student part remains clear and simple.
Interesting fact: “Carnival of Venice” became especially famous as a theme for variations. Niccolò Paganini wrote a virtuosic work on the tune titled “Il carnevale di Venezia,” Op. 10.
