“Copy Cat” is a Primer Level lesson piece built around a 5-finger scale idea. It is written in 4/4 time and marked “Happily.” The music uses simple quarter notes, half notes, repeated phrase shapes, right-hand melody, left-hand imitation, dynamic changes, and a short creative activity at the end. The main idea of the piece is musical copying: the right hand plays a short phrase, and the left hand answers with the same kind of motion.

Measures 1–4 introduce the copycat idea. The right hand begins at forte with the first phrase, while the left hand prepares to answer. In the second half of the line, the left hand copies the pattern in the bass staff, matching the lyrics “left hand has to copy, too.”

Measures 5–8 repeat the same game with a new phrase. The dynamic changes to piano, and the right hand plays first again. The left hand then answers with the matching pattern underneath.

Measures 9–12 return to forte and continue the copying pattern. The right hand gives the next musical command, and the left hand responds with the same kind of descending motion.

Measures 13–16 close the piece at piano. The right hand begins the final phrase, and the left hand copies it one last time. The last line also includes two skips for the student to find, as shown in the reading alert at the top of the page.

The optional teacher duet adds a fuller accompaniment underneath the student part. The score notes that the student plays one octave higher when using the duet.

Interesting fact: The bottom of the score includes a creative activity where the student makes up a two-measure melody with the right hand, then has the left hand “copy” it by playing back the same melody.
