“Green Frog Hop” is a Level 2A piano piece with a playful animal character and a bouncy 4/4 rhythm. The piece is built around the image of a frog hopping, with short rhythmic ideas and sudden register changes giving the music its lively character.
Measures 1–4 introduce the main “rib-bit” motive. The right hand uses short repeated-note patterns while the left hand answers with low notes, creating the first frog-like sound of the piece.
Measures 5–8 move into the first sung phrase. The melody becomes more connected, and the left hand includes a quick leap upward. This section shifts from the opening “rib-bit” motive into a more lyrical phrase.
Measures 9–12 continue the main song section. The melody remains simple and stepwise, while the left hand adds a longer supporting line underneath. This section completes the first half of the piece.
Measures 13–16 return to the opening “rib-bit” idea. The same bouncy motive comes back, now leading into a stronger accented ending for the phrase.
Measures 17–20 repeat the “rib-bit” idea with a slight change in register and texture. The rhythm remains similar, but the sound becomes more active as the music prepares the final section.
Measures 21 to the end form the closing section. The music becomes slower and softer, then ends with a sudden forte “SPLASH!” on the lowest C of the piano.
Interesting fact: The score notes that frogs can jump 20 times their body length. If a person could jump like a frog, they could leap over 100 feet.
