“Canon - Level 2A - Showtime Classics - Pg. 10–11” is a simplified piano arrangement based on Johann Pachelbel’s famous Canon. This version is written in 4/4 and marked Moderato, with a very clear student part built from long held notes, simple intervals, and short melodic patterns. The arrangement also includes a teacher duet part, which helps fill out the harmony and gives the piece the familiar sound of Pachelbel’s Canon while keeping the student part at an early piano level.
Measures 1–8 introduce the basic repeating bass pattern of the Canon. The student part uses long held notes and very simple hand positions, with the right and left hands taking turns. The slow-moving notes make the opening easy to read while still showing the repeating harmonic pattern that gives the Canon its recognizable structure.
Measures 9–16 continue the same long-note texture, now with slightly fuller intervals in the right hand. The music remains calm and steady, with the hands moving carefully through the familiar chord progression. The soft dynamic keeps the opening section gentle and controlled.
Measures 17–24 introduce a more melodic right-hand line. The notes move in stepwise motion while the left hand holds longer bass notes underneath. This section gives the student part more motion and begins to sound more like the famous flowing melody of Pachelbel’s Canon.
Measures 25–32 build into a stronger middle section. The right hand continues the melody while the left hand adds fuller support, and the dynamic rises to forte. This gives the arrangement its largest sound before it returns to a quieter texture.
Measures 33–end bring back the slower, more spacious material from the beginning. The music gradually softens with a diminuendo, then includes a brief eighth-note figure marked rit. before the final quiet chord. The ending feels calm and settled, matching the peaceful character of the Canon.
Interesting fact: Pachelbel’s Canon was originally part of a work called “Canon and Gigue for Three Violins and Basso Continuo in D Major.” The Canon is built over a repeating bass pattern, which is one reason it works so well in simplified arrangements for students. Henle describes the source as “a 3 Violinis con Basso c.” and notes that the two-measure bass pattern is repeated 28 times in the original piece.
