The Allegro ma non troppo opens in 6/4 with a dotted lower melody beneath steady repeated upper dyads. In mm. 1–8, long upper notes gradually emerge above that pulse while the lower line continues its rising and falling figure. Measures 9–30 develop the same layered texture through changing harmony, grace-note approaches and broader upper phrases. The repeated pulse briefly moves into the left hand in mm. 31–34 before the sustained upper line returns.
Measures 35–52 intensify the texture through crescendos, fuller chords and the appassionato passage, then diminish into a brief ritardando. At m. 53 the original tempo returns. Measures 55–58 place the repeated accompaniment in the left hand under a quieter, more sparsely moving right-hand line.
The earlier melody and accompaniment return in mm. 59–81 with altered harmonic and voicing details. Measures 82–89 build toward the strongest chordal passage, passing through wider registers and accented replies before another ritardando. Measures 90–102 alternate longer upper notes and the familiar dotted figure, with the repeated chordal accompaniment increasingly carried by the left hand.
Pianissimo at m. 103 begins the closing passage. The lower figure gradually settles while repeated upper chords continue; the final calando in mm. 108–110 ends on a held sonority with a fermata.
