Beethoven’s Bagatelle, WoO 61a is a very short piano piece in G minor, marked Allegretto quasi Andante. The music has a quiet, compact character, with a narrow melodic range, small slurred figures, light two-hand exchanges, and several chromatic notes that give the piece a slightly serious color. Unlike many of Beethoven’s more energetic bagatelles, this one feels more like a small lyrical study, built from short phrases rather than dramatic contrasts.

Measures 1–3 introduce the main idea. The right hand begins almost alone, moving through a simple slurred line with small eighth-note figures. The left hand enters later with a short answering shape, so the opening feels sparse and delicate rather than full.

Measures 4–6 continue the same gentle style but bring the hands together more often. The right hand keeps the main melodic motion, while the left hand supports with short broken figures and low notes. Several chromatic notes appear in this section, adding a more expressive sound to the otherwise simple texture.

Measures 7–9 bring back the opening kind of motion, now slightly varied. The right hand again carries the upper melodic line, while the left hand answers below. The phrase stays clear and restrained, with the slurs helping connect the small melodic gestures.

Measures 10–12 close the piece with the most expressive writing. The right hand uses a small ornament-like figure, while the left hand moves underneath with a brief chromatic line. The final measures include fermatas and a full closing chord, giving this tiny bagatelle a calm and complete ending.

Interesting fact: WoO 61a is also cataloged as Hess 56. It is listed as a late Beethoven piano miniature from 1825, showing that Beethoven was still writing very small character pieces near the end of his life.
