“Burgmüller - Op. 100, No. 15 - Ballade” is a dramatic Romantic character study with a fast Allegro con brio tempo and a mysterious minor-key sound. The piece is built around repeated chord attacks, sharp sf accents, sudden dynamic contrasts, and a softer dolce middle section before the stormy opening material returns.
Measures 1–30 present the main dramatic section. The right hand uses repeated staccato chord patterns while the left hand answers with quick moving figures underneath. The music begins p misterioso, but the repeated sf accents make the section feel tense and restless instead of quiet and calm.
Measures 31–56 move into the contrasting dolce section. The texture becomes smoother, with a singing right-hand melody over repeated left-hand chord support. This middle section grows through cresc., then becomes more animated before moving back toward the original dramatic character.
Measures 57–82 bring back the opening material. The repeated staccato chords, sharp accents, and left-hand running figures return, making the second half feel like a stronger version of the beginning. The music again moves between p, sf, and f, keeping the ballade character dark and theatrical.
Measures 83–96 close the piece with a final push. The writing becomes more forceful, with accented notes, fast repeated figures, and a short dim. before the final held notes. The ending does not soften completely; it keeps the dramatic character all the way to the last cadence.
Interesting fact: “Ballade” is one of the more popular pieces from Burgmüller’s Op. 100 collection. It shows up often in student performances, tutorials, and graded exam preparation, including ABRSM Grade 4 materials for 2023–2024 and 2025–2026. That popularity makes sense because the piece sounds dramatic and exciting, but it is still written as an intermediate teaching piece. (ABRSM Grade 4 Piano 2025 & 2026 performance)
