“Burgmüller - Spirit of Chivalry - Op. 100, No. 25” is a bold Romantic character study marked Allegro marziale. As the final piece in Burgmüller’s Op. 100 collection, it has a more public and heroic character than many of the earlier studies. The music uses martial dotted rhythms, repeated chordal gestures, sharp contrasts between forte and piano, a lighter delicato middle section, and a final build to fortissimo, giving the piece the feeling of a small ceremonial march or knightly scene.
Measures 1–8 present the main martial theme. The right hand uses dotted figures, rests, and short accented gestures, while the left hand supports with firm chordal accompaniment. The repeated forte and piano contrasts make the opening feel energetic and declarative, while the crescendos add a sense of forward drive.
Measures 9–16 repeat and extend the opening character. The same march-like rhythm returns, with the hands moving in a compact, strongly shaped texture. The crescendos and accented notes keep the music bold without making it overly long, and the repeat signs give the opening section a clear formal frame.
Measures 17–24 create the main contrast, marked piano delicato. The right hand shifts into smoother running figures, while the left hand supports with simple held tones and steady bass notes. This section feels lighter and more graceful than the opening march, like a brief noble or courtly contrast inside the larger chivalric character.
Measures 25–34 bring back the main martial material. The opening dotted rhythm and chordal support return, now functioning as a reprise after the delicato middle section. The crescendo beginning around measure 31 strengthens the return and prepares the final push toward the ending.
Measures 35–47 drive the piece to its final close. The music grows from forte into quicker triplet motion and rising passagework, creating the strongest build of the piece. The crescendo assai leads into a fortissimo ending with full chords and a firm final cadence, closing the Op. 100 collection with a heroic, decisive finish.
Interesting fact: “Spirit of Chivalry” is the final study in Burgmüller’s 25 Easy and Progressive Studies, Op. 100. Because it ends the collection with a martial, heroic character, it feels less like a simple technical exercise and more like a miniature finale, combining dotted rhythms, contrast, and strong closing gestures to give young pianists a dramatic finish to the set.
