Chopin’s Étude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 10 No. 4, often nicknamed “Torrent,” is a fiery Romantic étude built around relentless speed, power, and precision. The piece is marked Presto and con fuoco, meaning it should be played very fast and with fire. Unlike some études that focus mainly on one hand, this work demands extreme control from both hands, with rapid sixteenth-note passagework, sharp accents, sudden dynamic contrasts, and constant shifts across the keyboard.
Measures 1–8 introduce the main explosive character of the étude. The right hand begins with fast, driving figures while the left hand answers with equally active motion underneath. The strong forte opening, accents, and fp markings immediately create a tense and dramatic sound.
Measures 9–18 continue the same restless energy with repeated patterns, quick hand movement, and growing intensity. The hands trade rapid figures back and forth, requiring evenness and strength without allowing the tempo to rush out of control.
Measures 19–36 develop the opening material through more forceful sequences and wider keyboard motion. The passagework becomes more demanding as the hands move quickly between registers, while the accents and crescendos keep pushing the music forward.
Measures 37–48 bring a slightly more lyrical but still intense middle section. The rapid motion continues, but the shape of the phrases becomes broader, giving the music a brief sense of expansion before the stormy material returns.
Measures 49–64 return to the driving technical character with renewed force. Both hands are active, and the music becomes increasingly powerful through repeated patterns, strong accents, and thick harmonic motion.
Measures 65–79 build toward the final climax. The texture becomes more urgent, with heavier accents and a stronger sense of forward drive. This section requires stamina, control, and clear rhythm as the music moves toward the ending.
Measures 80–end close the étude with maximum intensity. The final section is marked with even more fire and force, ending with brilliant passagework and powerful final chords.
Interesting fact: Chopin’s Op. 10 No. 4 is one of his most famous “virtuoso” études because it gives both hands nearly nonstop technical work. It is not only a study in speed, but also a study in controlled intensity, since the performer must keep the sound fiery without becoming harsh or uneven.
