Czerny’s Op. 299 No. 13 is a fast technical étude from The School of Velocity. The piece is written in 3/8 time and marked Presto, giving it a quick, driving character. The main challenge is keeping the rapid sixteenth-note patterns light, even, and clear while also maintaining strong rhythmic accents and sharp dynamic contrasts.

Measures 1–12 introduce the main technical pattern. The right hand plays quick broken figures while the left hand supports with short accented notes and chords. The markings leggiero and marcato show the contrast between the light running notes and the stronger bass support.

Measures 13–24 continue the same fast motion with more dynamic shaping. The right hand keeps moving through repeated patterns and changing finger positions, while the left hand provides a steady rhythmic foundation underneath.

Measures 25–36 move into a softer section, beginning at pp and gradually building again. The texture remains quick and delicate, giving the student practice controlling speed without letting the sound become heavy.

Measures 37–48 return to a stronger, fuller character. The music grows toward ff, with more dramatic accents, wider spacing, and stronger left-hand support. This section requires both power and control.

Measures 49–64 develop the étude with broader passagework across the keyboard. The right hand moves through longer, continuous sixteenth-note patterns while the left hand supports with slower harmonic motion. The music becomes more brilliant and demanding in this section.

Measures 65–78 bring the étude toward its final close. The texture becomes softer and more graceful for a short time, then the final measures build back to a strong fortissimo ending. The last chords give the étude a confident and decisive finish.

Interesting fact: Carl Czerny was a student of Beethoven and later became the teacher of Franz Liszt. His technical studies helped shape the way generations of pianists practiced speed, finger control, and keyboard fluency.
