Measures 1-4 begin Andante maestoso in 2/4 with dotted upper phrases and octave leaps above lower tremolo harmonies. The melody gains fuller inner notes as the harmony changes.
Measures 5-15 continue with upper chords, short dotted replies and flowing figures above alternating lower bass notes and chords. Softer phrases, chromatic inflections and a held harmony with a fermata interrupt the fuller chord passages.
Measures 16-23 introduce a dolce rising figure and quieter chord replies. Short lower figures and upper fermatas lead to rapid repeated chords in both parts, with crescendos, diminuendos and pauses separating the responses.
Measures 24-44 expand the chord passages through changes of register, repeated-note figures and accented replies. A con fuoco phrase and a marcato response lead to fuller upper chords and further rapid passages. Measures 37-38 soften into a lusingando figure and ornamented reply before fuocoso chords return. The closing repeated figures are marked ritardando before a held final harmony.
