Gretchaninoff’s Cradle Song, Op. 98, No. 9, is a quiet Lento whose flowing melody rests over sustained inner notes and gently moving bass lines.
Measures 1–6 unfold in overlapping phrases, with long-held tones underneath the melody and small swells in the harmony. Measures 7–10 bring a more continuous lower line into the treble register. The following phrases broaden into longer notes before the opening material reappears higher in measures 15–18. The last two measures echo the earlier harmonic gesture and settle beneath a fermata.
Interesting fact: The lullaby is written in 4/4, and its rocking effect comes from overlapping voices and uneven note lengths rather than a triple-meter accompaniment.
