Gretchaninoff’s Waltz in F, Op. 98, No. 15, pairs a broad, singing melody with light chords on the second and third beats. Long melodic notes give the opening an unhurried character despite the steady dance pulse.
The opening sixteen measures balance sustained phrases with a more animated rise and fall, colored by chromatic notes. The contrasting section begins more strongly, using dotted rhythms and a descending melody above fuller chords. Its momentum gradually subsides into a held pause. The opening theme then returns softly, and the final phrase tapers into rests.
Interesting fact: In the historical edition, this waltz bears the English character title The little would-be man, rather than simply Waltz in F.
