Night Journey is a dark D-minor Andante whose melody unfolds below a persistent upper accompaniment. Repeated eighth-note intervals create a restless background for the slower-moving bass.

The opening five measures introduce a rising and falling bass phrase beneath the repeated upper notes. The first low melodic entry is delayed, allowing the accompaniment to establish the atmosphere before the tune emerges.

Measures 6–11 develop the bass line into a broader arch and a stronger arrival. Chromatic changes intensify the harmony while the upper rhythm continues almost without interruption.

Measures 12–19 gradually lengthen the bass notes and reduce the intensity. Short connecting gestures lead into a very soft, slowing conclusion in which the persistent motion finally comes to rest.

Interesting fact: The principal tune lies in the bass: the seemingly prominent repeated notes above it form the accompaniment.
