“Heller - Tarantelle - Op. 46, No. 7” is a lively Romantic piano study in 6/8 with a fast Vivace character. The music is built around repeated tarantella rhythms, light staccato figures, quick right-hand motion, simple but active left-hand support, and sharp dynamic contrasts. Even though it is an etude, it works more like a small character piece because the dance rhythm stays clear from beginning to end.

Measures 1–12 introduce the main tarantella idea. The right hand uses quick repeated figures and short detached gestures, while the left hand supports with light bass notes and simple rhythmic patterns. The section begins softly, then grows into a brighter mf sound before pulling back again.

Measures 13–30 continue the main dance material with stronger contrast. The right hand becomes more active with repeated notes, small chromatic touches, and quick slurred figures, while the left hand keeps the 6/8 pulse moving underneath. The sudden fp, f, and p markings give this section a restless, quick-changing character.

Measures 31–44 form the lighter middle section. The texture becomes a little more delicate, with softer dynamics, repeated short figures, and a more playful back-and-forth motion between the hands. This section gives the piece some contrast without losing the tarantella rhythm.

Measures 45–59 bring back a stronger final drive. The repeated dance figures return with more force, including f and sf markings near the end. The final measures keep the fast 6/8 motion active and close the piece with a sharp, energetic finish.

Interesting fact: Heller’s Op. 46 is a set of 30 Progressive Studies, but No. 7 is often known by the descriptive title “Petite Tarantelle.” It remains popular in teaching and graded repertoire because it sounds like a lively recital piece while still focusing on a very specific technical idea: light, fast tarantella-style motion.
