Measures 1-70 set a long upper melody over recurring lower sixteenth-note figures in 3/4. Four measures of accompaniment precede the melody, which expands from single notes into octaves and chords while the lower figures alternate bass notes and repeated intervals.

Measures 71-137 introduce a quieter, slightly slower upper melody over the same lower pattern. Changes of register and fuller chords lead to a pause in measure 135, followed by two measures marked Prestissimo con furore with rapid chordal figures in both parts.

Measures 138-240 return to the opening tempo and melody. The upper octaves and chords build over the repeated lower figures before the calmer passage at measure 208. The final measures thin into widely spaced chords, rests, and a quiet slowing close.
