Measures 1–12 form a dark introduction of melodic fragments, chords, trills, and a rising bass phrase. Repeated right-hand chords enter at measure 13 beneath which a bass melody develops. The repeated chords move to the left hand at measure 25 for a broad upper melody, then return to the right hand at measure 33. The Misterioso at measure 46 reduces the texture to sustained chords above a moving bass, followed by a quiet legato phrase and a final forceful chord.
