A Christmas poem set to music
Christina Rossetti’s poem first appeared in 1872 under the title A Christmas Carol. It later became known by its opening line, In the Bleak Midwinter. Gustav Holst wrote the tune CRANHAM for the text, and the hymn appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906. Rossetti’s words move from a wintry landscape to the intimate scene of the Nativity. Hymnary’s account of the poem and hymn.
A quiet place in Christmas music
The hymn appears in numerous hymnals and in Christmas Eve worship resources. Its reflective character offers a quieter counterpart to more exuberant seasonal songs. The closing verse turns the Christmas story into a personal response, helping explain its continuing place in worship and devotional music.
