Hymnal setting

From Psalm 98 to a Christmas favorite

Isaac Watts published the words of Joy to the World in 1719 as part of his Christian interpretation of the Psalms. The text draws on Psalm 98, celebrating the coming of the Lord and the rejoicing of creation. The familiar tune ANTIOCH became associated with it through the work of American musician Lowell Mason. The United Methodist Church’s hymn history.

A celebration shared through music

Although its original subject reaches beyond the Nativity, Joy to the World became firmly established as Christmas music. Its broad invitation to rejoice suits congregational singing and large holiday performances. The familiar descending opening also makes the melody recognizable in instrumental settings, from a single piano to a full ensemble.
