A Christmas Eve beginning in Austria
Silent Night was first performed in Oberndorf, Austria, on Christmas Eve in 1818. Joseph Mohr wrote the words, and Franz Xaver Gruber composed the music. Their German-language song, Stille Nacht, began in a local church setting before traveling far beyond the town where it was first heard. The history of Silent Night in Oberndorf.
A carol shared around the world
The song has been translated into hundreds of languages and dialects. That reach has made it a meeting point for many Christmas traditions, with the same melody carrying different words from one community to another. Its peaceful character remains central whether it is sung together or heard in an instrumental setting.
