Road to Virtuosity provides many sheet music downloads for free. While many websites place quality sheet music behind subscriptions, paywalls, or locked download systems, RTV makes a large amount of music available at no cost.

This is done intentionally. RTV wants to support students, teachers, families, churches, schools, and musicians who may not be able to afford expensive sheet music collections or subscription-based libraries.

Each piece on RTV is labeled with a copyright status so users can understand how the sheet music may be used. The two most common labels are Public Domain and Non-Commercial.

Public Domain Sheet Music

When sheet music is marked Public Domain, it means the original musical work is no longer protected by copyright, or was never protected by copyright. Many works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and other historical composers are in the public domain because the copyright on the original composition has expired.

Public domain music may generally be performed, studied, copied, and shared freely.

However, a modern edition of a public domain piece may still have its own copyright. For example, a publisher may create a new arrangement, engraving, fingering system, layout, or edited version of an old piece. That modern edition may be protected even if the original composition is public domain.

RTV works to provide its own files and editions whenever possible, rather than reposting copyrighted editions from other publishers.

Non-Commercial Sheet Music

Some RTV sheet music is marked Non-Commercial. This means the sheet music is free to download and use, but it may not be sold, reposted, republished, or used as part of a commercial sheet music product.

For most normal music use, Non-Commercial sheet music on RTV may be used freely. This includes:

  • Personal practice
  • Private lessons
  • Student assignments
  • Church services
  • School use
  • Recitals
  • Festivals
  • Auditions
  • Public or private performances

In simple terms, students, teachers, churches, and musicians may download the sheet music and use it for real musical purposes. The restriction is mainly against reselling, republishing, or redistributing RTV files as someone else’s product.

Free to Download Does Not Mean Free to Resell

RTV gives users free access to many files, but the files themselves may still be protected.

Users may not take RTV sheet music and:

  • Sell it
  • Upload it to another sheet music website
  • Remove RTV markings and claim it as their own
  • Include it in a paid book or digital collection
  • Use it to build another download library
  • Redistribute large collections of RTV PDFs outside of the website

The best way to share RTV sheet music is to share the original RTV page link. This allows others to download the file directly from RTV and see the correct title, level, point value, copyright status, and related information.

Public and Private Performance

Sheet music marked as Public Domain or Non-Commercial on RTV may be used for public and private performance, according to the copyright status listed on the piece page.

This means the music may be used for home practice, lessons, recitals, church services, school programs, auditions, festivals, and similar performance settings.

RTV makes these files available so musicians can actually use them, not just view them.

Why RTV Offers Free Sheet Music

RTV offers free sheet music as a generous resource for musicians, students, teachers, and churches.

Many people need music but cannot afford to purchase every book, arrangement, or subscription they need. Churches may need music for services. Teachers may need affordable repertoire for students. Families may need printable music for children learning at home.

RTV helps by providing free downloads whenever possible.

Donations Help Keep RTV Free

Creating and maintaining free sheet music still requires time, work, and expense. Files must be created, edited, formatted, checked, uploaded, organized, and updated.

If RTV has helped you, your students, your family, your church, or your school, please consider donating.

Donations help RTV create more free sheet music, fix and improve existing files, expand the library, and continue supporting musicians who benefit from free access.

A donation is not required to use RTV sheet music. The files are offered freely according to their copyright status. But donations help make this generous resource possible.
