Hymnal setting

The journey of the Magi in song

John Henry Hopkins Jr. wrote both the words and music of We Three Kings. The carol appeared in his 1863 collection Carols, Hymns, and Songs. Its verses give individual voices to the gift-bearers, while the refrain brings them together around the guiding star. This structure makes the journey itself part of the song’s dramatic shape. Christmas and Epiphany traditions

The story connects the carol with both Christmas celebrations and Epiphany, when Christian worship remembers the visit of the Magi. Its alternating solo verses and shared refrain lend themselves to group performance and musical storytelling. Piano arrangements carry the recognizable melody into an instrumental setting while preserving the sense of a continuing journey.
