Ivanov's Etude a la Rachmaninov is an energetic character study built around rapidly repeated chords and a broad melodic line. Dense sonorities and shifting chromatic harmonies give the music a forceful, restless character.
The opening presents repeated chords alone, with their upper notes gradually shaping a melody. A more sustained tune then emerges above the pulsing texture, and the bass joins to deepen the sound. The central passage opens into a lyrical line over sweeping triplet arpeggios before the repeated chords return and grow into a fuller climax. Near the end, broad chordal writing gives way to descending five-note flourishes, followed by a final chordal ascent and widely separated closing notes.
An interesting detail: the accompaniment changes from repeated chords to flowing triplets in the central passage, while the closing flourishes use groups of five, giving each major texture its own rhythmic identity.
