“Kuhlau - Sonatina Op. 55, No. 1 - Second Movement” is a lively Classical sonatina movement in 3/8 with a quick Vivace character. The music is built around light staccato motion, repeated sections, short accented figures, and a contrasting espressivo dolce middle section before the opening material returns. Even though it is a teaching sonatina, this movement has a lot of energy and needs the kind of clean Classical texture that makes the fast writing sound bright instead of heavy.

Measures 1–25 introduce the main Vivace material. The right hand uses quick repeated notes, short slurred figures, and light staccato patterns while the left hand supports with simple bass notes and chord tones. The section moves between p, f, mf, and sf markings, giving the opening a lively back-and-forth character.

Measures 26–52 continue the fast material with more motion and stronger dynamic contrast. The hands move through quick repeated figures, short rests, and sharper accents. This section keeps the same light 3/8 drive but becomes more active as the phrases build and relax through cresc., f, and dim. markings.

Measures 53–80 form the contrasting espressivo dolce section. The texture becomes more lyrical, with a smoother right-hand melody and softer accompaniment underneath. The music still keeps a gentle pulse, but the character is less playful and more song-like than the opening Vivace material.

Measures 81–110 bring back the main opening style and close the movement. The quick staccato figures, accented notes, and bright Classical energy return, followed by a final push with stronger dynamics and a clear closing cadence.

Interesting fact: Kuhlau’s Op. 55, No. 1 is a two-movement sonatina, so this Vivace movement works as the final movement of the whole piece. Instead of adding a separate slow middle movement, Kuhlau keeps the sonatina compact: a first movement with clear Classical form, followed by this fast closing movement.
