Mozart’s Minuet, K. 5 is a short Classical keyboard piece in F major, written in 3/4 time and marked Allegretto. The music has a graceful dance character, with short slurred figures, simple left-hand support, repeated sections, and clear dynamic contrasts. Even though the piece is brief, it gives students practice with Classical phrasing, light articulation, steady triple meter, and shaping small musical ideas with expression.
Measures 1–4 introduce the main minuet character. The right hand carries the melody with short slurred figures and stepwise motion, while the left hand supports with simple bass notes. The opening begins at mf and has a poised, elegant sound.
Measures 5–10 continue the first section with more active right-hand figures. The music moves from f to p, then gradually builds again through a crescendo. The first section ends with a repeat sign, giving the opening half of the minuet a clear balanced shape.
Measures 11–14 begin the second repeated section more softly at mp. The melody continues in the right hand, while the left hand keeps the harmony simple and steady. This section moves into a slightly different harmonic area before returning to stronger dynamics.
Measures 15–19 become more energetic. The right hand uses repeated quick figures and short slurs, while the left hand gives a steady bass foundation. The dynamics shift from f to p, then grow again through a crescendo, helping the phrase feel more directed.
Measures 20 to the end form the closing passage. The right hand plays a descending melodic line, then the final measures return to a stronger sound with f and a poco ritardando. The repeat sign at the end completes the second half of the minuet and gives the piece its traditional dance form.
Interesting fact: Mozart composed this Minuet in F major, K. 5 in 1762, when he was still a child. It appears in Nannerl’s Music Book, the notebook used by the Mozart family for keyboard pieces and musical study.
