Rebikov’s Kukla is a compact two-beat miniature with a gently swaying accompaniment and a melody that alternates connected phrases with lightly detached paired notes.
The opening tune returns in varied form while the lower part keeps rising and falling in short arcs. A contrasting middle passage reduces the upper voice to a simpler line and introduces chromatic notes into the accompaniment. The initial texture then returns more strongly, ending with a brief melodic rise over a descending bass.
An interesting detail is the independence of the phrasing: the accompaniment often continues its own two-note curves beneath longer melodic slurs.
