Reinhold’s Silhouette, Op. 39, No. 12, is a lightly drawn miniature in B-flat major. Repeated melody notes and quick turning figures stand above short chords placed between the beats, giving the music a gently skipping pulse.
The opening tune alternates measured notes with little cascades. In the middle section, the bass takes over the melodic outline while the upper chords retain their offbeat rhythm. The original tune then returns very softly, gains a few inner notes and chromatic touches, and fades into a slower, sustained close.
Interesting fact: the accompaniment keeps its offbeat identity even when the melody changes hands, so the middle section sounds like the same musical silhouette viewed from a different register.
