War Song is a vigorous D-major piece in 6/8, driven by bold accents, octave bass lines, and increasingly full chords. Its emphatic dotted rhythms and leaping gestures create a martial character.
The opening presents a direct melodic call, then thickens it with chords and chromatic harmony. A ringing passage brings the tune into the lower register while the upper part adds forceful harmony. Rising sequences, sustained chords, and repeated accented figures build the later sections. The ending compresses the rhythmic energy into short chordal gestures and separated final notes.
Interesting fact: The compound 6/8 meter gives this martial piece two large beats per measure, each divided into three, rather than the straight subdivisions of a typical duple march.
