Spindler’s Two Preludes are a matched pair of eight-measure Andantes in G major. Both contrast flowing broken chords with a much slower line, but they place those elements in opposite registers.
In the first prelude, the upper part circles through eighth-note figures above long bass notes. A small chromatic change and crescendo lead to alternating bass notes and chords in the closing measures. The second prelude transfers the continuous motion to the lower part while the melody moves in longer notes above it. The accompaniment drops away near the end, leaving a short descending figure and a quiet, spacious cadence.
