Morning Prayer opens Tchaikovsky’s Op. 39 with a quiet, hymnlike texture in G major. A measured melody rests above several closely connected voices, with small inner movements coloring the sustained harmonies.
The opening phrases return with a gradual increase in volume and a fuller cadence. A later passage changes the accompaniment to repeated bass notes beneath an arching melody. The final chords restore the stillness of the opening and close very softly.
An interesting detail is the repeated-note bass in the later passage: it introduces a gentle, bell-like pulse into music that began with sustained choral harmonies.
