The poco più f in measure 37 gives the return a little more warmth, but the overall character settles back into the quiet dreamlike mood.

Measures 43–49 close the piece with a final statement of the opening idea. The melody moves through the familiar expressive shape, then softens into piano for the last phrase. The final fermata lets the ending fade gently, matching the title’s image of a sweet dream gradually disappearing.

Interesting fact: “Sweet Dream” comes from Tchaikovsky’s Album for the Young, Op. 39, a collection written for children and modeled partly after Schumann’s Album for the Young. Even though the piece is intended for developing pianists, its expressive melody and darker middle section show Tchaikovsky’s ability to create a complete emotional scene in a small student piece.
