Measures 27–57 form the first large contrasting section. The music shifts into more continuous sixteenth-note motion, with short accented phrases, scale-like figures, and alternating stronger and softer dynamics. This section keeps the dance energy of the opening but develops it through more active passagework.

Measures 58–84 bring back the opening carnival theme. The bold chordal sound from the beginning returns, followed again by chromatic motion and a strong closing gesture. This gives the piece a clear return to its main material.

Measures 85–112 introduce a new middle section marked L’istesso tempo. The texture changes into shorter accented chord figures and quieter answering phrases. This section has more contrast between forte and piano, with repeated rhythmic ideas and a less continuous sound than the opening sections.

Measures 113–130 continue the middle material with lighter running figures. The right hand moves through quick patterns while the left hand provides a more open supporting line. The section builds gradually and prepares the return of the main carnival idea.

Measures 131–156 bring back the opening material one final time. The strong chordal theme returns, followed by the same kind of chromatic motion and energetic passagework heard earlier in the piece. This final return grows to a powerful fortissimo section.

Measures 157 to the end form the coda. The music moves into low repeated bass notes, sustained chords, quieter fragments, and one final explosive ending. The closing measures use a sudden fortississimo final gesture to end the piece with a dramatic carnival finish.

Interesting fact: The Seasons was commissioned by Nikolay Bernard for the journal Nuvellist, with one piano piece connected to each month of the year. “February” was given the subtitle “The Carnival,” connecting the piece with the energy and celebration of Mardi Gras.
